Suraj Bhan D.A.V. Public School students learn CPR-10

1036 students of Suraj Bhan DAV Public School, Vasant Vihar learnt hands-only CPR 10 today, which explained how to revive a person within 10 minutes of cardiac death.  The training camp was conducted by Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Awardee, Dr K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and Senior Vice President Indian Medical Association.
Sudden cardiac deaths are more common in dry winter than in wet winter.  Ayurveda also mentions that there are more chances of acute rise in blood pressure and irregular heart disease in dry winter.

Smt. Anita Ahuja, Principal of DAV School said that one should include training of CPR 10 in every school in such a way that 100% of students and teachers get trained.

Later in the day at the annual function of Public Relations Society of India held at Eros Hotel, Dr. Aggarwal said that in today’s era nobody should die of sudden unexpected cardiac death.  But people like Farooq Sheikh, cine actor do die now and then. It is possible to anticipate sudden cardiac death and to revive a person after death, he further added.

If you can climb two flights of stairs, walk 2 km or have an exercise with your partner in the bed without any symptoms, there are negligible chances that you will die of sudden cardiac death in the next 10 years.  If your blood sugar, blood pressure and blood cholesterol are kept under control; you are a non-smoker and your ECG is normal, this further rules out future sudden cardiac death.

CPR 10 Utsav Inaugurated

New Delhi: 15th December 2013: Inaugurating a day-long hands-only CPR 10 Utsav, Mr. Jalaj Shrivastava Chairman NDMC said that cardiac first aid training in hands-only CPR 10 should be provided in every school and college as part of their educational programme. It has now become possible to train everybody as mouth to mouth resuscitation is no more required.
In his message, Mr D M Sapolia Chief secretary Govt of Delhi said that all heart patients must ensure that their relatives and employee learn this technique as heart patients are at risk for sudden cardiac arrest and they can be revived if the bystander at that point of time can attempt CPR 10 on them if they develop cardiac arrest.
Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Awardee and President Heart Care Foundation of India Dr. K K Aggarwal and Dr P K Sharma, MOH NDMC said that all healthcare personnel including security personnel in the hospital premises, bus conductors, bus drivers, police personnel etc. should also be trained in CPR 10 as they are the first ones to reach if a person has cardiac arrest.

Dr. Aggarwal further said that CPR 10 is only effective if it is attempted within 10 minutes of cardiac arrest. The Foundation released the CPR 10 mantra, which in Hindi reads as “Marne ke dus minute ke under dus minute tak aur 10 x 10 yani 100 prati minute ki speed se apni chhati peetne ke badle marne wale ki chhati peeto.”
In English it can be remembered as “within 10 minutes of death, earlier the better; at least for the next 10 minutes, longer the better; compress the centre of the chest of the dead person continuously and effectively with a speed of 10x10 i.e. 100 per minute.”
The journalists should also be trained in the technique as they are also among the first ones to reach the victim’s place. The chances of revival are up to 60 per cent if attempted within 10 minutes and these chances can be increased if there is availability of public access defibrillators.

Dr. Aggarwal said that the Government should issue an advisory so that every public place where there is a gathering of more than 50 people, which includes trains, buses, malls, hotels and restaurants it should be compulsory for them to have their staff trained in CPR 10 and also to make available public access defibrillators. As of today, only airlines have made it mandatory to have public access defibrillators.

Over 3000 persons were trained in a single sitting.

CPR 10 Training Camp at Bal Bharti Public School, Dwarka, New Delhi

Heart Care Foundation of India organized a Health Checkup camp and CPR 10 training camp at Bal Bharti Public School, Dwarka, New Delhi. The Foundation has conducted one to one training on” Hands only CPR 10” of 77157 people since 1st November 2012.

Administering a training to over 2500 people today on” Hands only CPR 10” , Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India said that even gasping is a sign of cardiac arrest. One should start chest compression hands only CPR in a gasping person.

CPR 10 is based on the concept that consciousness does not leave the body for 10 minutes after the cardiac arrest. If Hands-only CPR is done on the victim by a bystander during this period, the person can be revived.

The Foundation has created a Savitri CPR 10 mantra which states “within 10 minutes of 10 - earlier the better, for the next 10 minutes - longer the better, press the centre of the chest of the deceased victim with a speed of 10x10 i.e. 100 per minute effectively and continuously. In Hindi, it reads as “marne ke dus minute ke under dus minute tak aur 10 x 10 yani 100 minute ke speed par apni chhati peetne ke badle marne wale ki chhati peeto.”

Dr Sanjay Gupta, Dr Smita Mishra, Dr Shashi Bala and sixty nurses and technicians participated in the camp

CPR 10 Utsav on 15th December at Talkatora Stadium

New Delhi: 6th December 2013: Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) jointly with New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will be organizing a mega CPR 10 Utsav camp in association with Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) on Sunday, 15th December 2013. More than 20,000 members of the public including school children and teachers would be practically trained one to one on human manikins.

Addressing the press conference, Padma Shri Dr. B. C. Roy National Awardee and President, HCFI, Dr. K. K. Aggarwal and Dr. P. K. Sharma, MOH-NDMC, said that this would be for the first time in the world that such a large number of people would be trained in one day.

Over 80,000 people have been trained by the Foundation in the last one year. Co-addressing the press conference Mr CS Majithia, Chief Manager, GAIL India Ltd. and Stuti Kohli, Sr Official from GAIL said that GAIL is committed to spread awareness about revival of a person after sudden cardiac death in the community. GAIL is providing human manikins for use in the one to one training.

The CPR probably started in India with Savitri for the first time saving the life of her husband Satyavan from Yamraj. The Foundation, therefore, has named this the “Savitri Mantra”. People in the camp would be provided one to one training. The participants will include nursing students, medical students, general public, NDMC schools and other schools & colleges, etc.
Public can also visit, participate and get the training. There will be no fee for the training.

Following 25 facts of CPR were also released:
1.    Project CPR 10 was launched by Heart Care Foundation of India on 1st November, 2012

2.    It is possible to revive a dead person within 10 minutes of death.

3.    The consciousness does not leave the body for up to 10 minutes after cardiac arrest and the brain remains alive during this period.

4.    If the heart can be revived before the brain dies, it is possible to revive a person.

5.    It is practically impossible to seek medical assistance in these 10 minutes.

6.    In out of hospital cardiac arrests, the only answer is cardiopulmonary resuscitation i.e. CPR 10 done by a bystander.

7.    Everybody above the age of 10 can learn CPR 10 and save a life.

8.    CPR 10 does not require mouth to mouth breathing.

9.    No certification is required under the Good Samaritan Law for doing CPR 10.
10. CPR 10 can be remembered by understanding the Savitri Mantra and doing practically one to one learning with the manikins.

11. The name ‘Savitri Mantra’ has been given as the first successful CPR was done by Savitri on her husband Satyavan.

12. The Savitri Mantra: “Marne ke dus minute ke ander (earlier the better) kam se kam dus minute tak (longer the better), 10 x 10 hundred per minute ki speed se apni chhati peetne ke badle mare hue vyakti ki chhati peeto.”

 13. The HCFI trained 11459 people in one day and created a world record on 6th April, 2013 on the eve of World Health Day.
14. Early recognition of sudden cardiac arrest: unresponsiveness or absent/gasping breathing
15. Immediate initiation of excellent CPR is important.

16. Excellent CPR 10: Push hard, push fast – with continuous attention to the quality of chest compressions, and to the frequency of ventilations

17. Minimize interruptions in CPR.

18. Compress the chest by 1½ inches.

19. Push hard and push fast on the center of the chest: Maintain a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute; compress the chest at least 5 cm (2 inches) with each down-stroke; allow the chest to recoil completely between each down-stroke and minimize the frequency and duration of any interruptions

20. Lay rescuers should not interrupt chest compressions to palpate for pulses and should continue CPR until an automated external defibrillator (AED) is ready to defibrillate, emergency doctor assume care, or the patient wakes up.

21. CPR 10 is not recommended for children or arrest of non cardiac origin (e.g., near drowning).

22. Electrical phase comprises first 4 minutes after cardiac arrest and requires immediate defibrillation if available along with CPR 10

23. Hemodynamic phase spans 4-10 minutes following sudden cardiac arrest and patients in this phase benefit from excellent chest compressions to generate adequate cerebral and coronary perfusion and immediate defibrillation.

24. Metabolic phase occurs following approximately 10 minutes of pulselessness and few patients who reach this phase survive.

25. Formula of 10 (CPR-10): To revive after sudden cardiac arrest, within 10 minutes of  cardiac arrest (earlier the better) for the next 'at least' 10 minutes (longer the better) compress the center of the chest, continuously and effectively, with a speed of 10 x 10 (100) per minute.

Gambling in Indian Mythology

·         Gambling is mentioned on Diwali celebrations in the story of Mahabharata. It teaches us about taking calculated risks in life
·         In Mahabharata, it teaches that excess of everything is bad. If Yudhishthira had not risked Draupadi on that day while plying dice, there would not have been a Mahabharata. The same divine dice game became a vice for that moment.
·         Even if you lose while gambling, do not lose heart and take conscious-based decisions. Krishna (consciousness) saving Draupadi (material things in life) means the same.
·         On the day of Diwali, one starts with new projects in life and taking calculated risks makes sense.
·         Gambling on Diwali can be a symbolic game but should not become a vice.
·         According to mythology, Goddess Parvati enjoyed playing dice with Lord Shiva on this day. It’s a popular saying that those who cling to virtue at this festival time, refusing to gamble, will be reborn as donkeys. This means that its foolishness to not take calculated risks in business.

·         Loosing and winning is part of life and one must learn to balance the two states of mind.

Over 2000 Nurses in Perfect Health Mela

Inaugurating Divya Jyoti, an inter nursing school festival, held in the Perfect Health Mela being organized by Heart Care Foundation of India at Constitution Club of India from 23rd to 27th  October, 2013, Dr. S S Agarwal Former Director DIPSAR and Mr Pawan Sinha, Astro Uncle, said that every practicing doctor must hire the services of a nurse practitioner in his clinic who can not only provide nursing care but also counsel the patients for prevention of lifestyle disorders.

It should also be the responsibility of the nurse to provide full vaccination care including adolescents, adults and elderly.

Nurse should also be attached through the clinic to patients at their homes to enquire about their health, about their appointment and vaccination schedules.

Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India said that 90% of patient-doctor mishaps are linked to lack of communication between the patient and the doctor and this link can be filled by the nurse practitioner.

In the West, another important role is played by the pharmacists whose job is to explain everything about prescription drugs. Unfortunately, in India pharmacists do not visit the patients even in the hospitals. Till that concept arrives in India, nurses partially can play that role to explain how to take drugs.

Over 2000 nurses participated in the event, which included debates, play, slogan writing and model competition.

 Medical treatment will become costly
The recent Supreme Court decision to award a compensation of 5.6 crore (one million dollars) in a medical negligence case is premature for the India society. It will only lead to corporate sector increasing treatment costs exorbitantly and the same may become beyond the reach of a common man.

Following are the possible implications said Dr. Aggarwal
1.  The treatment is already costly at corporate hospitals and it will become further costly.
2.  Nothing has been done by the Supreme Court to eradicate quackery so far, which is responsible for spoiling most cases at the initial stages.
3.  More and more complaints will be lodged in consumer forums and medical councils with a hope of getting a huge compensation.
4.  Every death will be viewed with a suspicion of medical negligence.
5.   The insurance companies in all likely will increase their premium.
6.  No family physician will afford to charge consultations in hundreds.
7.  The judgment will also affect Homoeopaths and Ayurveda Physicians.
8.  Today CGHS pays Rs. 61 for consultation. Most doctors will refuse to take such cases. Similarly, they may refuse to see patients of corporate sectors, which pay less fees.
9.  Many hospitals may start signing a no litigation contract with patients for providing subsidized services.
10.  In the current Supreme Court Judgment, the doctors were let off with minimal compensation but that does not protect them in other future cases.

Prohibition Department creates awareness about hazards of drinking
Commenting on the subject, Dr. Aggarwal said that smoking when added to alcohol is more harmful.

Alcohol is harmful if it is consumed by patients with fatty liver, potbelly obesity, uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled blood pressure, damage to the heart muscles with low pumping action and high triglycerides levels.

Even though the western literature says that moderate use of alcohol reduces chances of future heart attack, the same has not been proven by Indian studies.
