Why the month of Magh in our mythology, it is said to omit one food item everyday?

Kalpavas is observed in the month of Magh as one month of disciplined life. Apart from a compulsory early morning sunbath, a person is expected to eat only once in a day and omit one food item every day. One should eat less salt during the full moon Purnima which falls during the Magh month. Purnima is linked with water retention, therefore, eating less salt on any Purnima is recommended. The only answer as to why our Rishi Munis created ritual of omitting one food item everyday can be either to practice controlling desires (detached attachment) or the Rishi Munis knew that Indians are prone to getting allergy to many food items. By omitting one item every day a person often comes to know the food to which he or she is allergic. One can only be allergic to food items containing protein. There are large numbers of Indians who are allergic to pulses. All these can be eliminated by doing sequential food elimination and the month of Magh is nothing but a process in which you follow sequential elimination of one food every day.
